課程概述

The course is designed to introduce you to the wonderful world of proteins,
addressing such issues as
1. How proteins fold? The pathways of folding, and the forces that stabilize protein structures.
2. How proteins are identified and their 3-dimensional structures determined?
3. How proteins are coded, synthesized, and post-translationally modified in cells?
4. How proteins are sorted? Protein and membrane trafficking in cells.
5. How proteins levels are regulated in cells? Systems biology.
6. How proteins function as enzymes, and in signal and free energy transduction?
7. Molecular basis of protein aggregation diseases.

Reading assignments

These assigned readings are given at the end of the power point files of the lecture notes each week.

Reading and writing assignments

From time to time, you will also be assigned a key paper in the literature as a reading assignment. For homework, you will be asked to turn in a 2-page essay based on the reading of this paper. The paper will be posted on the course website.

The essay should be written in English or Chinese and typed. Use Arial 16 font boldface for title, Times New Roman font 14 bold face for headings, and Times New Roman font 12 and 1.5 space for the body of the text. The essay should include a brief introduction including a description of the issue under study, main findings, a brief critique, a short summary (no more than 5 lines), and a few key references (no more than 3). Be succinct and to-the-point.

Your Chinese name and student number should appear in bold font 12 on each page of the essay at the upper right hand corner.

In writing your essay in English, refrain from copying outright from the article under review. Plagiarism is extremely unprofessional. Use your own words, even if your usage of the English language is not as accurate, correct, or polished as it should be. Your ability to communicate in English will improve with practice! If you write your essay in Chinese, refrain from direct translation of the English text.

Please feel free to augment the essay by a few tables and figures. However, the total number illustrations (schemes plus figures and tables) should not exceed 3 items. Again, refrain from copying figures or tables outright from the article you are reviewing. The entire essay, including illustrations and references, should not exceed 3 pages.

This writing assignment is due in class two weeks from the date assigned at 10:20 a.m.

Tentatively, there will be 10 of these essay assignments. Only 5 of these essays need to be turned in. We will determine 40% of your grade based on the 5 essays you turned in, or using the best 5 of your essays, if you turn in more than 5.

Each of your essays will be graded, and assigned a grade of A (9 points), B (6 points), or C (3 points), based on clarity of presentation, conciseness, flow of ideas, depth of comprehension, and the originality of your insights.

Midterm and final examinations

A midterm examination has been scheduled for the course. In addition, there will be a comprehensive final examination based on multiple-choice questions as well as questions requiring brief written
responses. In order to eliminate any disadvantages or handicaps related to language, the written responses could be in English or Chinese. The final is a “take home” examination requiring no more than 3 hours. It will be distributed on Monday January 11, 2010, and due back on 4:00 p.m. Friday January 15th.

Lecture notes

Lecture notes will be available as pdf files on the course website two or three days before the Tuesday the lecture is to be given. Only students who are taking the course for credit will be given access to the website. If you are register for the course, you will be given the “password” to access the site. The notes are copyrighted, and the rights belong to the instructor or lecturer. Please do not abuse this privilege!
